AMC workers attacked during anti-encroachment drive in Anandnagar, two injured

Two Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) employees sustained injuries after an anti-encroachment team was attacked by a group of men in the Anandnagar area on Tuesday evening. The incident occurred around 6.30 pm on Tuesday, when an AMC enforcement squad was clearing unauthorised street vendors near Krupa Flats, adjacent to Haran Circle and Utsav Garden.
As per the FIR filed by Keyurbhai Joshi, Ward Inspector (Sarkhej), South West Zone, the team was carrying out routine pressure-relief operations using three pressure vehicles and two enforcement vans. During the operation, an unidentified man confronted the team and objected to the seizure of fruit and vegetable carts. He allegedly incited the local crowd, shouted, “Why are you taking the trucks?” and encouraged people to “gather and beat them up”.
Soon after, the situation escalated, and three others identified as Minesh Bhavsar (resident of Gajraj Apartment, Anandnagar), Rohit Shavan, and Sagar Koli (both residing near Prahladnagar Garden) reportedly joined the confrontation. The group allegedly abused AMC personnel, smashed the left-front window of the AMC’s enforcement vehicle and assaulted staff members.
Two members of the municipal team, labourer Vishal Patni and security personnel Adityabhai Kahar, sustained injuries to their left hands during the altercation. Following the violence, the AMC team withdrew temporarily to the South West Zone office, fearing further unrest.
Later that evening, AMC officials returned to the location with support staff and detained the accused trio, who were then handed over to the Anandnagar police station for legal action.
Police have registered a case against the accused under relevant sections for obstruction of government duty, assault, vandalism, and causing injury to public servants. AMC officials have condemned the incident, stating that such attacks on public servants performing their duties will not be tolerated and called for stringent action.
Police said further investigation is underway, and legal proceedings will follow based on statements and available CCTV footage.
