AMC to pay ₹1,650 per stray dog for sterilisation
In Ahmedabad, private agencies carry out the sterilisation of stray dogs. Since 2021, Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has paid these agencies ₹976 per dog for sterilisation and feeding expenses. Now, a proposal has been submitted in the upcoming Health Committee meeting of the AMC to increase this amount to ₹1,650 per dog.
As per the ABC (Animal Birth Control) Rules-2023, the Animal Welfare Board of India has approved a rate of ₹1,650 per stray dog for recognised organisations working to control and regulate the stray dog population in cities.
Under this provision, a proposal has been made in the AMC seeking approval to assign the work of capturing and sterilising stray dogs, with a budget cap of ₹3 crore, to Shri Yash Domestic Research Center and Shri People for Animals for a period of two years. This means an increase of ₹674 per dog compared to the previous rate in 2021.
An estimated 2,00,000 stray dogs roam the streets of Ahmedabad. In areas where the number of complaints about stray dogs biting or nuisance is high, the AMC has initiated a dog population survey. In the first phase, this task has been assigned to an organisation called Goal Foundation in a ward each from the eastern and western zones of the city.
