The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has planned to install jet aerators in around 70 lakes across Ahmedabad at a cost of ₹3.75 crore to improve water quality and increase oxygen levels.

The move is aimed at enhancing dissolved oxygen in water bodies and reducing harmful gases such as ammonia, hydrogen sulphide and methane.

The city has over 110 lakes of varying sizes under the civic body’s jurisdiction. Officials said jet aerators will be installed in those water bodies where water remains stagnant for longer periods.

The corporation has floated a tender for the project, which will also include the installation of paddlewheel aerators and floating fountains in selected lakes.

These systems help increase oxygen levels in water, which is essential for fish and other aquatic life. Paddle wheel aerators also circulate water, bringing stagnant water from the bottom to the surface and ensuring uniform oxygen distribution.

The installations will take place at Ambli Lake, Bodakdev Lake, Sola Gam Lake, Ugati Lake, and Gota lakes, including Jhanjariu and Kachariu, as well as Gulmahor, Devsiti, Koparan and Kali Lake in Oganj.

How does a jet aerator work?

A jet aerator works by forcing water into the air through a pump, allowing it to mix with oxygen before falling back into the lake. This process helps reduce foul odour, improves water quality and supports the growth of beneficial bacteria that break down pollutants.
