‘Smart City’ Ahmedabad has a road network spreading 3,000 km, out of which a stormwater network has been installed over a mere 900 km. Because of this insufficiency, rainwater accumulation is a common phenomenon in most parts of the city.

To curb this, Amdavad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) Water Supply and Sewerage Committee officials were directed to prepare a database displaying the areas where the stormwater network is yet to be installed and the total cost of this project. This report will be presented at the next meeting of the committee.

Committee chairman Dilip Bagaria said, “The city’s existing stormwater network was discussed with the officials. They mentioned that 20% to 30% of areas in the city have them installed. If this system is implemented in all the areas, coupled with the sewerage network, the rainwater could be unclogged with ease.”

It is noteworthy that the city’s Sindhu Bhavan and Dharnidhar Derasar roads were clogged for hours last year during the heavy rains. On top of that, the monsoon was also a headache for the city’s east and north zones.

AMC’s standing committee has approved a budget of ₹12,262 cr this year. In which, ₹45 cr was allocated for the stormwater network.
