Another incident of violence has been reported during a campaign launched by the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to curb the problem of stray cattle in Ahmedabad.

On Monday, AMC’s Cattle Nuisance Control Department (CNCD) team went to seize cattle being kept in an illegal enclosure near Science City Road in the Bodakdev area. During the operation, cattle herders allegedly clashed with the civic staff and drove the animals away.

Police have registered a case for obstructing government duty and have launched an investigation.

As part of the city’s ‘No Cattle Zone’ enforcement drive, more than 90 stray cattle have so far been removed from Ahmedabad, according to officials.

According to the complaint, the incident took place at around 5.30 pm, when a CNCD patrol team, including officers Chintan Barad and Ramesh Chaudhary, was carrying out checks on New Science Park Road near Hebatpur village in the Bodakdev zone. The team began the process of seizing cattle after spotting around seven cows housed in a fenced enclosure along the roadside.

During the operation, a man identified as Jigar Bharwad arrived at the spot and claimed ownership of the cattle. When asked to produce a valid licence to keep cattle, he reportedly failed to do so. Officials alleged that he stood at the gate, preventing the civic staff from entering and engaged in a heated argument.

The complaint further stated that while the argument was ongoing, two other men accompanying Bharwad jumped over the fence, entered the enclosure and chased the cows out through a small rear gate. By the time police were alerted and reached the spot, only two cows remained in the enclosure, which were subsequently seized by the CNCD team.

Bodakdev police have registered a case against Jigar Bharwad and two unidentified persons under charges of obstructing a public servant in the discharge of official duties.

Efforts are underway to identify and arrest the two other accused who are currently absconding.
