AMC seizes 4,850 kg of suspected cow ghee worth ₹31.8 lakh in Ahmedabad

The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC)’s food department on Monday seized around 4,850 kg of suspected cow ghee worth ₹31.81 lakh during raids at three locations in the city as part of a drive against the sale of allegedly adulterated ghee marketed as pure cow ghee.
The action was carried out in the Indrapuri ward area of AMC's South Zone, officials said.
During an inspection at Laxmanbhai Industrial Estate behind Purvadeep Society in the CTM area, food safety officials found approximately 3,250 kg of suspected cow ghee stocked at the premises of a distributor operating as a super stockist of "Rhythm Cow Ghee" and "Vachnamrut Cow Ghee".
The seized stock was estimated to be worth ₹21.31 lakh, officials said.
Samples of both brands were collected under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and sent for laboratory analysis. The entire stock was suspended from sale, and the premises were sealed pending further investigation.
The initial findings revealed that both brands were allegedly manufactured by Sarthak Food Products located on Ode-Pirana Road near Paldi-Kakanj village in Daskroi taluka.
During the investigation, AMC officials also identified two other distributors of the same products in Ahmedabad: one based in Vatva and another in the Dudheshwar area.
Separate teams were dispatched to both locations, where around 1,600 kg of suspected cow ghee worth an estimated ₹10.49 lakh was suspended from sale.
In total, the civic body's food department seized and suspended the sale of around 4,850 kg of suspected cow ghee worth ₹31.81 lakh during the joint operation at three locations across the city.
Officials said further legal action against the traders and other persons concerned will be initiated after the laboratory test reports are received, in accordance with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
