AMC rescues 44 child beggars from streets of Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad proudly projects itself as a rapidly growing megacity, showcasing modern infrastructure, flyovers, and development projects. Yet behind this glittering image lies an uncomfortable reality children are still being forced onto the streets to beg for survival.
In a joint operation by the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC), police, and the Social Security Department, 44 children were found begging at 41 identified hotspots across the city’s north-west and south-west zones. The most disturbing aspect is that 40 of these children had allegedly been pushed into begging by their parents.
The children were presented before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). While four children were sent to a child protection home, the remaining 40 were handed back to their parents after a warning not to involve them in begging again.
Authorities also detained 20 adult beggars, including 15 men and five women, and produced them before a court. They were subsequently sent to beggar homes in Odhav and Dabhoda.
