In a significant step towards mitigating chronic urban flooding, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is advancing its ambitious interlinking of lakes project in east Ahmedabad.

Newly elected Mayor Hitesh Barot, accompanied by senior office bearers, visited the project site on Wednesday to review the progress of ongoing works. The ₹69.09 crore initiative aims to create an integrated network of lakes that will enable rapid drainage of rainwater while enhancing water storage capacity.

The project is expected to deliver direct relief to nearly three lakh residents in the flood-prone areas of Nikol, Vastral, and Ramol-Hathijan. Officials stated that the interlinking system will channel excess rainwater efficiently, reducing waterlogging during heavy monsoon spells and recharging groundwater levels.

This infrastructure development is part of AMC’s broader strategy to build climate-resilient urban spaces in the rapidly expanding eastern zone of the city. During the site visit, Mayor Barot emphasised the project’s importance for sustainable urban development.

“This interlinking will not only solve the recurring problem of flooding but also ensure better water conservation for the future,” he said.
