In a bid to tackle traffic congestion, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has initiated an traffic management system on experimental basis on the busy S G Highway, deploying physical barriers and a unique capsule-shaped traffic flow design at two major junctions.

The initiative, which began on May 17, focuses on the Palladium Mall junction and the area near Iskcon Temple. To streamline vehicle movement and create obstacle-free corridors, AMC has placed 23 iron drums near Iskcon Temple and 29 near Palladium Mall. Additionally, 54 plastic road barriers have been deployed, including 25 used in sections where the capsule-shaped layout opens up to allow smoother traffic flow.

The project was developed in close coordination with the Ahmedabad Traffic Police, AMC’s Engineering Department, and engineering consultant Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), Surat.

The unconventional use of drums and barriers aims to guide traffic more efficiently, minimising abrupt stops and chaotic merging that often lead to jams.

“The experiment has been designed specifically to address traffic congestion, reduce the risk of accidents, and save commuters valuable time and fuel,” an AMC statement read.

The system is currently under close monitoring by traffic personnel to assess its real effectiveness. This pilot project comes as a response to growing public frustration over traffic snarls on one of Ahmedabad’s most important roads. If proven successful after evaluating citizen feedback and traffic data, AMC plans to replicate the model in other congested junctions across the city
