The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has implemented an advanced rainfall forecasting system to obtain timely and accurate predictions of weather conditions during the monsoon season.

The new web-based integrated modelling and decision support system will enable rainfall forecasts at the ward level across the city, helping civic authorities improve preparedness and response during heavy rain events.

According to AMC officials, the system will utilise data generated by the High Performance Computing (HPC) facility of the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune.

The data-driven modelling platform provides advanced forecasts of weather conditions, rainfall intensity, and air quality, enabling various civic departments to take timely action.

Under the system, rainfall forecasts are prepared using the Daily Accumulated Rainfall model based on the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model with a resolution of 1.5 kilometres.

Officials said the technology allows analysis of rainfall distribution at both city and district levels, providing detailed information on the expected rainfall in different areas.

The ward-level forecast uses colour-coded indicators to display rainfall intensity across various parts of the city, making it possible to identify areas likely to receive heavy rainfall.

The system also provides rainfall pattern projections for different time periods through experimental modelling.

AMC officials said the forecasting platform will help identify areas vulnerable to waterlogging in advance, allowing authorities to undertake necessary preventive measures before heavy rainfall occurs.

The civic body expects the system to improve monsoon management, particularly in sensitive locations, and reduce inconvenience to residents through better planning and preparedness.
