AMC identifies 79 traffic congestion points to boost AMTS-BRTS punctuality, avoid delays

In a major push to improve public transport punctuality, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has identified 79 key locations across the city where traffic congestion is severely delaying AMTS and BRTS buses. The civic body has initiated a special joint operation with the traffic department to resolve these bottlenecks and ensure buses run on schedule.
According to AMC officials, although approximately 75% of buses currently operate on time, persistent delays on several routes have drawn passenger complaints.
A comprehensive survey conducted across all seven zones revealed that buses are frequently stuck due to heavy traffic pressure, illegal parking, wrong-side driving, and poor traffic discipline. At many spots, buses are held up at traffic signals or due to congestion, while the lack of functional left turns at several junctions has worsened the problem.
The survey has led to the preparation of a detailed list of these 79 congestion points, enabling real-time monitoring of the issues. During peak hours, buses remain trapped for long periods at these locations, disrupting entire route timetables and affecting daily commuters.
AMC is now implementing a multi-pronged action plan. The estates and traffic departments are working together to clear illegal parking, improve road infrastructure, enforce traffic rules, and create additional parking facilities. Efforts are also underway to ease pressure at critical junctions by addressing left-turn restrictions and signal management.
Ahmedabad currently provides affordable public transport to over 7 lakh passengers daily through around 1,250 AMTS and BRTS buses. The corporation plans to add 3,000 more air-conditioned buses in the next two years and expand the electric bus fleet.
