Amid the ongoing stray dog row in India, during the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC)’s health committee meeting, when BJP councillors were urged to build shelters for stray dogs in their respective wards, the proposal was met with collective opposition.
The councillors clearly refused to assign a plot and built stray dog shelters in their wards.
As per a rough estimate, Ahmedabad is home to approximately 2 lakh street dogs. Since 2019, a total of 1.89 lakh dogs have been sterilised under the Animal Birth Control Rules.
Dogs sterilised in the last five years
| Year | Number of dogs | Expenditure (in Crores) |
|---|---|---|
| 2021-22 | 30,360 | 2.77 |
| 2022-23 | 46,471 | 4.43 |
| 2023-24 | 40,206 | 3.92 |
| 2025-26 | 1,658 | 1.61 |
Moreover, certain areas of the city, including Danilimba, Bakrol, Lambha, Naroda, and Vastral, have pounds for stray dogs.
The AMC is also building a dog shelter worth ₹1.44 crore by December 2025. A ₹1.26 crore dog shelter is also in the making in the Lambha area. Both shelters will have the capacity of housing 400 stray dogs.
