AMC commissioner orders removal of stray cattle from streets within a week

The municipal commissioner of Ahmedabad, Banchhanidhi Pani, in a meeting on Wednesday issued directions to capture all stray cattle from roads within a week.

“If necessary, action should also be taken to cancel the licenses of cattle owners issued by the corporation,” according to official sources.

On the other hand, reports have surfaced that some councillors from the ruling party have pressured teams not to capture stray cattle in their wards.

Since July 2023, the AMC has been carrying out operations against stray cattle under the Cattle Nuisance Prevention and Control Policy. During the meeting  chaired by the municipal commissioner, he expressed strong dissatisfaction over the functioning of the Cattle Nuisance Control Department.

The commissioner instructed senior officials to ensure that all stray cattle are removed from public roads within a week. He also directed that illegal cattle sheds in various areas should be demolished.

However, the department’s officers and staff find themselves in a dilemma—if they act on the commissioner’s instructions, councillors from the ruling BJP have reportedly warned them of adverse consequences if stray cattle are removed from their wards.

The AMC’s Health and Solid Waste Committee also met on Wednesday where it was decided that if stray cattle are not removed from city roads by the CNCD (Cattle Nuisance Control Department), a motion of censure against senior officials of the department will be brought in future committee meetings, confirmed committee chairman Jashubhai Chauhan.
