Ahmedabad’s Subhash Bridge to be rebuilt at cost of ₹250 cr, work to roll out in phases

Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to dismantle and comprehensively rebuild the ageing Subhash Bridge, a key arterial crossing over the Sabarmati, with a ₹250-crore project that will add new parallel spans and expand capacity to eight lanes, civic officials said on Friday.
As per the plan, tenders for the new bridge will be floated on Monday. The project will be executed in two phases. In the first phase, a new two-lane bridge will be constructed on either side of the existing structure, running parallel to it. Subsequently, the superstructure of the old bridge will be removed and rebuilt, officials said.
Once completed, the corridor will comprise a total of eight lanes, significantly easing traffic congestion on one of the city’s busiest east–west links. Civic authorities estimate that work on dismantling and rebuilding the old bridge will take around nine months, while construction of the new parallel bridges is expected to be completed within two years.
According to the AMC, the existing Subhash Bridge has completed 50 years of service life, making structural intervention unavoidable. Technical assessments have recommended removal of the superstructure, followed by restoration and strengthening through new construction. The project will include the construction of seven new piers to support the expanded spans.
During the execution phase, the bridge is likely to remain closed to traffic for up to nine months. Officials said traffic diversion plans will be drawn up to minimise disruption, particularly during peak hours.
Mayor Pratibha Jain said the project aims to give Subhash Bridge a “new form” while ensuring long-term safety and capacity for the city’s growing traffic. Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani said the phased approach would allow the AMC to maintain connectivity while upgrading critical infrastructure.
Once the first phase is completed, the new structure will be opened to all vehicles, officials added. The redevelopment of Subhash Bridge is part of a broader push by the civic body to modernise Ahmedabad’s road and bridge network in line with rising traffic volumes and safety requirements.
