Ahmedabad dog census: RFID chips implanted in over 8,500 stray dogs

The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is conducting a comprehensive dog census across all 48 wards of the city. Fieldwork is already underway in major areas, including Paldi, Maninagar, Behrampura, Danilimda, and Navrangpura. 

Unlike previous estimations, this drive utilises a dedicated mobile application to collect precise, ward-wise data, including the dog’s sex, sterilization status, and age profile.

A cornerstone of this project is the integration of RFID microchip technology. The Cattle Nuisance Control Department (CNCD) has already successfully implanted RFID chips in over 8,540 dogs. These 15-digit identifiers act as a digital health record, allowing authorities to instantly access a dog’s vaccination history and sterilization status.

The AMC intends to craft more effective policies for animal birth control and public safety. The census, which provides a blueprint for the city's canine management, is expected to conclude by March 2027, paving the way for a more organized and rabies-free urban environment.

As part of its ambitious "Zero by 30" mission, the civic body aims to make Ahmedabad a rabies-free city by 2030 through systematic census and health monitoring.
