The union ministry of external affairs informed that all possible efforts are made continuously to trace the nine missing youth, including four from Gujarat’s Mehsana, who left for the USA from Dominica.

This was the ministry’s reply to a public interest writ filed before the Gujarat high court regarding the missing persons.

The statement from the ministry quoted that the youths were being traced through all means possible, even through emails.

It also stated that the ministry of foreign affairs in France has also confirmed on Aug 24, 2023, that no Indian civilian was apprehended in the French overseas territories.

Similarly, information was sought from the Indian Embassy in Port of Spain. According to the information received by the Indian Ambassador in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Sudhir Patel, one of the nine missing Indians, was given a notice by the Internal Security Department of Guadeloupe (a French overseas territory) that he was not a citizen there but an Indian citizen.

However, it has been clarified by the attorney general of the Dominican Republic that there is no Indian citizen in the country’s prison.

The ministry of external affairs stated that it will continue to keep in touch with all the Indian embassies and offices abroad to find the nine missing Indians.

Earlier, a PIL was filed about these nine missing Indians, including four from Gujarat’s Mehsana, who had left for Dominica to illegally enter the USA later in Dec 2022.

They were granted valid visas by the Government of Dominica and the Government of Antigua. After staying in Dominica for a while, the missing were to take off for Antigua. They had last been in contact with their families till Feb 2023.

The applicant of the PIL suggested that the missing Indians could be in the French overseas territories in the Caribbean, in countries such as Sint Maarten, Martinique, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, or Saint Barthélemy.
