Air India confirms only one survivor in Ahmedabad plane crash, 241 dead

Air India on Thursday confirmed that flight AI171, operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after take-off, resulting in 241 fatalities out of the 242 people on board. Only one person has survived the tragic incident.

The aircraft, a 12-year-old Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, departed from Ahmedabad airport at 1.38 pm, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members. The crash occurred within minutes of take-off.

According to Air India, the sole survivor is a British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, of Indian origin who is currently undergoing treatment in hospital.

The passengers included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese nationals, and 1 Canadian national.

In an official statement, Air India expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. "Our immediate focus is on supporting the families of those affected. A dedicated team of Air India caregivers has reached Ahmedabad to provide additional assistance," the airline said.

Air India also confirmed that it is fully cooperating with authorities in the ongoing investigation.
