AI for newsrooms workshop in Ahmedabad

In response to the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) in journalism, DataLEADS, a digital media company, organised a training workshop in Ahmedabad on Feb 15.

Tailored for journalists, fact-checkers, and digital publishers, this initiative addressed the ethical imperative of integrating AI into newsrooms. The workshop aimed to provide a wider perspective on how to look at the landscape of AI.

The ‘AI for Newsrooms’ workshop provided AI tools and techniques for navigating the contemporary media and information landscape. Through hands-on activities, acquired practical insights and tools to integrate AI resources into their work and newsrooms.

“In the era of more information and less consumption, you don’t find information, but it finds you. If we control information, we control everything,” said Syed Nazakat, CEO and founder of DataLEADS.

Nazakat focussed on the role of AI in the evolving media landscape. The session delved into how newsrooms globally use AI tools and approaches for increased productivity, profitability, and innovation.

How do you identify deep fakes?

We often encounter proliferation of deep fakes of both celebrities and ordinary individuals, raising significant concerns. With the general elections around the corner in India, it’s crucial to confront this threat by knowing tools for its detection.

Industry experts delivered insightful talks during the workshop. Sannuta Raghu, lead of the ‘AI Working Group’ with a digital news publication, focused on integrating AI and fostering innovation in newsrooms. The talks covered both broad experiences and specific insights into building individualised MyGPTs, emphasising the importance of bias detection and style- guidance.

AI expert professor Charlie Beckett, the director of Polis, the media think-tank shared his vision and insights on the future of AI.

Ankita Deshkar, fact-checker at a leading English daily, explored the subject of tackling deep fakes. The session revolved around understanding AI-driven misinformation and deep fakes, along with the various measures that newsrooms can employ to identify and combat them.
