Ahmedabad’s Veer Savarkar Sports Complex opens doors, fuels Commonwealth Games 2030 ambitions

As part of the vision to realise the dream of hosting the 2036 Olympics, Gujarat is developing international-level sports infrastructure. The Veer Savarkar Sports Complex, constructed in Ahmedabad at a cost of ₹825 crore, was inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
On this occasion, Shah expressed hope that Ahmedabad will host the international competition for police and fire department personnel in 2029, while there is a strong possibility that the city will be approved to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030. He further stated that the government is committed to bringing the 2036 Olympics to Ahmedabad.
Calling sports the “soul of India,” Shah highlighted that India’s goal has always been to secure a leading position in the field of sports, and that the country’s sports sector has completely transformed over the last 10 years.
He said the facilities at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex are world-class and will serve as genuine inspiration for athletes. He also declared that Ahmedabad is on track to become the sports capital of the country, noting the presence of modern venues like Narendra Modi Stadium, Sardar Patel Sports Enclave, and the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex.
Shah pointed out that the sports budget, which was ₹1,643 crore a decade ago, has now increased to ₹5,300 crore. New sports infrastructure is being developed across the country. Khelo India Games, Para Games, and Winter Games are also being organised. The new sports policy is based on five pillars—providing global platforms for Indian athletes, driving economic and social development through sports, turning sports into a people’s movement, and integrating sports with education.
At the inauguration ceremony, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said that Ahmedabad is ready to host the Olympic Games and that the new complex will serve as an important platform for athletes in the state. Gujarat has seen a significant expansion of sports-related infrastructure in recent years.
Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya added that several positive steps have been taken in the country’s sports sector, resulting in India’s steady progress. The newly adopted sports policy has helped build a robust sports ecosystem, playing a key role in the development of sports infrastructure.
Separately, at the 5th All-India Rajbhasha Conference in Gandhinagar, Amit Shah urged children to converse in their mother tongue. He also inaugurated a girls’ hostel at Sardardham as well as a scheme for adopting daughters.
