The Ahmedabad rural court in the city's Mirzapur area is set to undergo a revamp, and the court operations are to be shifted to the old high court near the Income Tax office.

However, practising lawyers and court staff see this as an ‘out of the frying pan into the fire’ situation, as the old court complex that they are shifting to, would pose new difficulties.

The court will operate from the complex located near the Income Tax office as soon as Oct 15, which is marked as the first day of Navratri.

The Mirzapur court will be vacated and the entire complex is reported to undergo renovation.

Along with the operations, the court’s movables and furniture will be shifted to the other complex as well. Case files, notices, important papers, and documents are currently being transferred on a priority basis.

Renovations were long due

The renovation of the Mirzapur court has been on the cards for a long time, say sources at the office premises.

The renovation was undertaken due to the deterioration of the multistorey Mirzapur court complex. The building even posed safety hazards and several complications for the lawyers, court staff, and the general public.

A law interned earlier at the Mirzapur court said, “The court always remains crowded due to the crammed building space. There is hardly a proper seating arrangement, and the furniture is also in a bad shape.” She added, “Stray animals are a common sight in the complex as well. The building lacks management, including that of the parking spaces.”

New court complex poses different challenges

Lawyers, parties involved in cases, court staff, police, and other government employees linked with the court, however, are concerned over the issues of parking, seating for lawyers, furniture, and other infrastructural facilities at the old court building.

The location of the court complex also attracts severe traffic problems. Convoys with large vehicles of lawyers, litigants, police, or government agencies have time and again jammed the entire alleyway leading up to the court.

A second-time relocation for the Mirzapur court

In the aftermath of the Gujarat earthquake, which jolted the entire state on Jan 26, 2001, the Mirzapur court incurred significant structural damages.

The dilapidated building went under renovation from May 7, 2001, to Nov 13, 2006. The old high court building undertook rural court operations during this tenure.

It was brought back to its original location at Mirzapur on Nov 14, 2006, after the renovation of the Mirzapur court complex.
