Ahmedabad’s metro expansion aligned with 2036 Olympics bid
Updated: Mar 9th, 2024
As Ahmedabad vies for its 2036 Olympic hosting bid, the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) has decided to expand the much-needed metro network.
The city’s East and West metro corridors, which now end at Thaltej, are set to expand to Manipur via Shilaj Cross Road.
The new network will also connect SP Ring Road and Motera via Vaishnodevi and Chandkheda.
The proposed metro line covers areas including Bopal, Shela, Ghuma, and other surrounding areas.
70% of the city’s areas are likely to be covered by the metro network, giving commuters a sigh of relief.
An underground metro station connecting Motera to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport is also proposed. GIFT City is also planned to be connected to the city via a metro line.
But what about the corporate and ‘posh’ areas on SG Highway?
For citizens living in the western ends of the city in areas like Prahlagdnagar, Sarkhej, Satellite, and others, a facility called “feeder buses” will be introduced that will ferry people to metro junctions like Thaltej, Manipur, and Shilaj.
Currently, the metro rail spans from Vastral to Thaltej and APMC to Motera Stadium.
