A 39-year-old woman from Thaltej in Ahmedabad sustained injuries after she was allegedly beaten with a heavy object by her husband during a domestic quarrel at their residence on Friday morning. The Vastrapur police have registered a case of assault and criminal intimidation and have begun an investigation.

According to the FIR, the complainant, Rita Sanjaybhai Kaliya, who resides with her husband and in-laws in Thaltej, said the incident occurred around 8 am when her husband, Sanjaybhai, returned home from Rajasthan after several days away.

Rita told the police she had gone to the terrace to dry clothes earlier in the morning, where she noticed her husband asleep and chose not to wake him. When he later came downstairs and began searching through the household safe for clothes, a quarrel erupted between the couple.

Husband allegedly hit wife on the head, assaulted mother-in-law

The complaint states that Sanjaybhai became enraged when Rita asked him to give her the clothes so she could look for them for washing. He allegedly began shouting, abused her verbally and then assaulted her with his fists. When Rita’s mother-in-law, Geetaben, intervened, Sanjaybhai reportedly pushed her aside and continued his assault.

Rita further alleged that her husband struck her two to three times on the back of the head with a heavy object resembling a hammer. At that moment, her father-in-law, Manjibhai who had stepped out for masonry work, returned and managed to intervene before the assault escalated.

The FIR notes that the father-in-law immediately called the Police Control Room after seeing the situation intensify.

Accused allegedly brandished knives and issued threats

Before the police arrived, the accused allegedly threatened the family with two knives, saying he would “not let anyone live today”. He was reportedly still holding the knives when the police reached the house.

Rita and her husband were taken to the police station, after which she was shifted to Sola Civil Hospital for treatment. Her mother-in-law accompanied her, and later Rita gave her formal statement.

Based on her complaint, the police have booked Sanjaybhai under relevant sections of the BNS pertaining to assault, criminal force and criminal intimidation, as well as provisions of the Gujarat Police Act.

Rita’s mother-in-law, Geetaben, and father-in-law, Manjibhai, have been listed as witnesses in the case. Police say further statements will be recorded and the weapon used in the assault will be recovered as part of the ongoing investigation.
