Ahmedabad woman alleges illegal triple talaq, husband’s remarriage

A 32-year-old woman from Ahmedabad has lodged a First Information Report (FIR) alleging that her husband unlawfully pronounced instant triple talaq and subsequently entered into a second marriage.

The complaint was registered following an application previously submitted at Gaikwad Haveli Police Station. The complainant, Samana, wife of Rauf Yasinbhai Khedawala, stated that she is currently residing with her parents in the Jamalpur area of Ahmedabad.

In her statement, the woman alleged that she was married to Rauf Khedawala on December 13, 2013, in accordance with Muslim personal law and customs. The couple has a 6-year-old daughter, Madiha, who is studying in Standard I.

As per the complaint, she initially lived in a joint family with her husband and in-laws in Juhapura. She has alleged that after the first year of marriage, she was subjected to persistent harassment and taunts by her mother-in-law and sister-in-law. She further claimed that her husband restricted her communication with her parental family and frequently quarrelled with her.

During her pregnancy in 2019, she was allegedly denied proper care and financial support by her husband and was sent to her parental home. She delivered her daughter on April 19, 2019, while residing with her parents. She further alleged that her husband did not visit the child for a considerable period and failed to take her back to the matrimonial home.

In June 2021, following intervention by community elders, she returned to live with her husband. However, she has claimed that she and her daughter were made to live separately on the terrace floor of the family home. Disputes allegedly resumed in 2023, following which she returned to her parental home in December that year.

In 2025, her husband sent her a notice of triple talaq by post. She claims that she did not accept the postal communication as she did not consent to the divorce. Subsequently, during proceedings related to an earlier application, the husband is said to have stated before the police on November 18, 2025, that he had pronounced triple talaq.

The woman has further alleged that on January 24, 2026, her husband married another woman, identified as Afreen Aslam Lakdawala, at Sarkhej Roza in Ahmedabad.

Based on the complaint, the police have registered a case and initiated an investigation.
