Ahmedabad woman accuses husband, in-laws of decade-long abuse, dowry harassment and hidden surveillance

The complainant, Rekha Solanki (Name changed), a resident of Ranip in Ahmedabad, alleged that the harassment began after her marriage to Sunil Solanki (Name changed) in 2009 and continued until January 2026. The FIR was registered at the Ranip Police Station on May 8, 2026.
According to the complaint, Rekha alleged that her husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law and other family members subjected her to sustained physical and emotional abuse, repeatedly demanded money and valuables from her parental family, and pressured her to agree to divorce proceedings.
She stated that despite her interest in pursuing higher studies and securing employment, her in-laws allegedly discouraged and obstructed her academic and professional ambitions. The complaint further alleged that she was frequently humiliated over her appearance, educational background and financial condition.
She alleged that her husband and relatives regularly hosted parties involving alcohol and non-vegetarian food, with outsiders frequently visiting the residence. She claimed that she was pressured to participate in activities she found objectionable and that objections raised by her often resulted in verbal abuse and violence.
One of the most serious allegations in the complaint concerns claims of sexually explicit material and hidden surveillance devices inside the house. The complainant alleged that her husband would allegedly show her “dirty and obscene videos” on his mobile phone and force her into physical relations against her wishes. She further alleged that her father-in-law once told her that CCTV cameras had been installed specifically to watch her and that a hidden camera had also been installed in her room. The accused even claimed to possess photographs and videos of her while changing clothes and bathing.
The woman further accused her husband of maintaining an extramarital relationship with another woman and claimed she had discovered photographs, chats and videos on his mobile phone. Following this, she alleged that her in-laws intensified pressure on her to leave the matrimonial home with her children.
According to the complaint, the accused allegedly demanded ₹20 lakh, gold ornaments, property and annual payments from her parental side under the guise of social customs. She also alleged that her husband borrowed substantial sums of money from her relatives, which were never repaid.
The complainant was repeatedly threatened by her in-laws, particularly with references to alleged influence in the prison department and links with “dangerous prisoners”. She alleged that she was warned that she and her children could be made to “disappear”.
The complainant has also informed police that she has separately initiated proceedings under the Domestic Violence Act, maintenance proceedings before the family court and litigation concerning residential rights and property disputes.
Ranip police officials confirmed that an investigation has been initiated and statements of concerned persons will be recorded. Officers said they would examine digital evidence, including mobile phone records, CCTV systems and any electronic devices allegedly used for surveillance.
No arrests had been officially confirmed at the time of filing this report.
