Ahmedabad has witnessed a surge in accident cases, making road safety a growing concern. According to a recent study by the Ahmedabad Traffic Police, an average of 38 citizens die each month in road accidents across the city. Shockingly, 26–30% of these fatal accidents are caused by pedestrian carelessness and two-wheeler rider negligence.

Research has revealed that on average, 26–30% of fatal accidents are due to mistakes by pedestrians or two-wheeler drivers. In the years 2023, 2024, and the first three months of 2025, the city witnessed around 4,000 road accidents, claiming the lives of 1,038 pedestrians or small vehicle users. The number of injured individuals is nearly equal.

Most of these tragedies occur when high-speed vehicles hit pedestrians, cyclists, or small vehicles due to even a small lapse in attention. In short, overspeeding and impatient road-crossing have proven deadly.

The Ahmedabad police and Amdavad municipal corporation (AMC) have taken some steps to remove faulty road cuts and correct road design flaws.

The traffic police have also enforced stricter rules, encouraging helmet use among two-wheeler riders and placing speed limits on larger vehicles. In 2023, they collected fines amounting to ₹2 crore. In 2024, they fined around 3 lakh citizens, collecting ₹20 crore. In the first three months of 2025, they registered 1.5 lakh cases and collected nearly ₹10 crore in fines.

Despite crores being spent on safety improvements such as lane systems and road redesigns, the SG Highway from Sarkhej to Gandhinagar continues to be a high-risk zone for accidents.

So far in 2025, 22 people have died, 40 sustained serious injuries, and 10 suffered minor injuries on SG Highway. In 2024, there were 31 deaths, 40 serious injuries, and 10 minor injuries. In 2023, there were 20 deaths and 40 injuries.
