Ahmedabad traffic police on ‘traffic drive’, collect fines from citizens; follow court orders
General public’s resentment towards traffic police

Days after the ISKCON bridge accident, Ahmedabad police have started a ‘traffic drive’, where they are collecting multiple fines from the general public.
It should be noted that the traffic drive was rolled out after the Gujarat high court rebuked the Ahmedabad traffic police and demanded accountability over the flouting of traffic laws in Ahmedabad. The court emphasised the need to enforce the law and train officers to curb violations until Aug 9.
The drive has however drawn a lot of flak among the citizens and netizens, alike. There are claims that the traffic police personnel are randomly stopping motorists and drivers and asking them for documents such as their original licence, vehicle registration certification book, etc. Those who lack sufficient documents at that moment are fined on the spot.
Outrage has also broken out on social media. Netizens are criticising police behaviour; while some say that the cops are penalising citizens who are caught unaware more harshly.
