Ahmedabad trader loses ₹1.42 lakh in overseas credit-card fraud, cyber cell probes

A 52-year-old businessman from Navrangpura in Ahmedabad has filed a police complaint alleging that an unidentified person fraudulently accessed his RBL Bank credit card details and carried out three unauthorised international transactions amounting to ₹1.42 lakh, despite no OTP being shared.
The complaint, registered on Wednesday with the Navrangpura police station, states that Dhaval Narendrabhai Shah, a resident of the Ellis Bridge area and owner of a local air conditioning business, was alerted by RBL Bank in the early hours of June 18 regarding suspicious activity on his credit card.
According to Shah, around 1.30 am, he received a call from the bank’s customer care team notifying him of three transactions—two of ₹20,327.34 each and one of ₹1.01lakh—totalling ₹1.42 lakh, made in the name of Adidas, Kwun Tong, HKG, a merchant based in Hong Kong.
Shah immediately confirmed that he had not authorised the transactions and had not shared any OTP or card verification details. Acting on the call centre’s advice, he had the card blocked and later filed a complaint with the bank’s vigilance department.
While the bank initially withheld the disputed amount under deferred payment status and did not charge Shah for the fraudulent transactions, it later informed him that he would be liable to pay the amount. Shah then approached the police seeking legal action against the unidentified fraudster.
In his complaint, he also submitted a copy of his credit card statement and screenshots of the transaction alerts he received via mobile.
Senior Police Inspector A A Desai of Navrangpura police station confirmed that an FIR has been lodged under relevant IPC and Information Technology Act sections. A cybercrime investigation is now underway.
The police suspect the victim’s card details may have been compromised through a phishing attack, data breach, or card skimming technique. Authorities are currently coordinating with the bank's cybersecurity team and international payment gateway firms to trace the origin of the transaction.
