Ahmedabad to spend ₹160 crore to fix contaminated water issue in 3 wards

Residents of Khadia, Dariapur and Asarwa areas of Ahmedabad have been battling contaminated water for years now, forcing families to rely on alternative sources as complaints piled up. With municipal elections approaching, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has finally moved to address the long-pending issue.
At AMC’s Water Committee meeting on Thursday, proposals worth ₹160 crore were tabled to overhaul old water and drainage pipelines across the three wards. The move comes after the then municipal commissioner had recommended replacing decades-old lines in the entire Central Zone — a suggestion that is now being implemented.
As per the proposals, Dariapur will see pollution-control work worth ₹16.52 crore awarded to Meera Construction, while Khadia’s new water and drainage network costing ₹11.08 crore will be executed by DB Infratech. Additional line-replacement and drainage works worth over ₹59 crore have been proposed for various pockets of Khadia and Dariapur.
In Asarwa, water and drainage infrastructure upgrades worth ₹47 crore will be undertaken by Shivam Builders and Maruti Trading Pvt Ltd.
Meanwhile, AMC has also approved a ₹168 crore sewage treatment plant at Fatewadi to address long-standing drainage backflow issues in Bopal, Shilaj and Shela. Officials said the Western Trunk Main line will be completed by December 1, 2025, allowing treated water to be released into the Sabarmati via the Fatewadi canal.
