Gujarat’s Ahmedabad is set to receive an additional 46.70 crore litres per day (MLD) of water from the Narmada river, as the civic body moves to meet rising demand driven by population growth in the city’s western zones.

The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) had sought additional water allocation from the Narmada authorities to cater to the expanding population in three western zones of the city. The request has now been approved, paving the way for increased daily water supply.

According to municipal sources, the additional water will be treated at the Jaspur Water Treatment Plant and supplied to newly developed areas along the Sardar Patel Ring Road and the S G Highway corridor in western Ahmedabad.

At present, water is supplied to the Jaspur treatment plant through the Dholka branch canal, where around 400 MLD of water is purified daily and distributed to water supply stations across the western, north-western and south-western zones of the city.

The civic body is planning to significantly expand the plant’s capacity. A new 200 MLD water treatment facility is to be constructed at Jaspur, while another plant with a capacity of 250 MLD is also proposed. Once these projects are completed, the total purification capacity of the Jaspur plant will increase to 850 MLD.

The additional 467 MLD of Narmada water will be treated at the upgraded facility and distributed to the fast-growing residential and commercial areas along the SG Highway and SP Ring Road. In addition, the water supply to the plant will be shifted from the Dholka branch canal to the main Narmada canal.

Currently, Ahmedabad receives around 1,600 MLD of water each day. With the new allocation, the city’s daily water supply will increase significantly, providing relief to newly developed areas and supporting future urban growth.
