Ahmedabad to procure dog kennels for ₹30 lakh to isolate aggressive, infected strays

The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to procure dog kennels at an estimated cost of ₹30 lakh to capture and isolate aggressive and infected stray dogs across Ahmedabad.
Aggressive or diseased stray dogs picked up from different areas of Ahmedabad will be housed in these kennels. According to official estimates, the city has around 2.10 lakh stray dogs.
The move follows a random survey of stray dogs conducted in 2019 and subsequent directions from the Supreme Court ordering the removal of stray dogs from public places, including educational institutions, hospitals, bus terminals and other sensitive locations.
Stray dogs are frequently seen in areas such as the Gita Mandir bus terminal, government hospitals and educational institutions.
Officials said the new rules will come into force about two weeks after the Supreme Court’s order. Under the guidelines, stray dogs caught from government offices and other public premises will also have to be shifted to designated dog shelters.
Currently, the civic body lacks adequate infrastructure to house large numbers of stray dogs. To address this, the AMC is developing a new dog shelter in Vastral at a cost of ₹1.30 crore, with a capacity to accommodate around 250 to 300 dogs. Additional dog shelters are also being developed in the Lambha and Naroda areas, officials added.
