Ahmedabad to get separate DEO offices for East and West, government seeks data from schools
The Gujarat government has begun preparations to split the Ahmedabad City District Education Officer (DEO) office into two separate offices, Ahmedabad East and Ahmedabad West, a long-pending demand aimed at resolving jurisdictional complications and improving school administration.
The Commissioner of Schools office has sought detailed data of all schools under the current Ahmedabad City DEO, including names and relevant information, to facilitate the division process.
The government has also approved new Class-1 DEO posts for both East and West offices, with financial provisions already sanctioned.
Currently, Ahmedabad City DEO manages over 3,500 government, grant-in-aid, and private schools at primary, secondary, and higher secondary levels.
Meanwhile, the Ahmedabad Rural DEO manages secondary and higher secondary schools in rural areas, while primary schools in rural areas fall under the District Primary Education Officer (DPEO).
The division aims to improve administrative efficiency. Resolve jurisdictional overlaps, especially as many schools within municipal corporation limits are currently under the Rural DEO. Also ensure focused attention on schools in East and West regions of Ahmedabad
They have also suggested that for streamlined governance:
All rural schools remain under DPEO
All schools in East Ahmedabad fall under the East DEO
All schools in West Ahmedabad fall under the West DEO
Current jurisdiction
East Ahmedabad schools up to SP Ring Road and West Ahmedabad schools up to the 132-ft Ring Road fall under the City DEO.
Areas beyond the 132-ft Ring Road, including Ghatlodia, Vastrapur village, Jivraj Park, Thaltej, Sarkhej, Bopal, and Gota, fall under the Ahmedabad Rural DEO.
What’s next?
With data collection underway, the establishment of separate DEO offices for East and West Ahmedabad is expected to improve governance, teacher and staff management, and timely resolution of school-level issues across the city.
