In a move aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving urban mobility, parking management in Ahmedabad will soon be made completely digital.

Under the Smart City initiative, Ahmedabad Smart City Development Limited has initiated the tender process to implement an AI-based video analytics smart parking system across the city.

AI cameras will be installed at all parking locations to detect real-time occupancy. At present, no such system exists at most parking sites in the city.

Currently, AMC manages on-street, off-street and multi-level parking facilities for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers. Most parking locations operate under a pay-and-park system managed by private contractors.

With a steady rise in the number of vehicles and heavy daily inflow from outside the city, parking chaos has become a persistent problem. This often results in traffic congestion, increased pollution and fuel wastage as motorists spend long periods searching for parking space.

Keeping these challenges in mind, the civic body has decided to introduce a smart, technology-driven parking solution. Once operational, the system is expected to save both time and fuel for city residents.

Over 12,000 cars and 35,000 two-wheelers to be parked in real time

After the implementation of the AI-based smart parking system, more than 12,000 cars and over 35,000 two-wheelers will be able to park in real time across Ahmedabad.

Parking capacity details:

On-street parking: Two-wheelers – 18,774 | Four-wheelers – 6,936

Off-street parking: Two-wheelers – 14,517 | Four-wheelers – 1,003

Multi-level parking: Two-wheelers – 1,946 | Four-wheelers – 1,459

Facilities for citizens under smart parking system

  • QR code-based digital payment for on-street parking and fully automated payment systems for off-street parking
  • Real-time parking data and updates through a digital platform
  • Automated entry, exit and enforcement using number plate recognition and boom barrier technology
  • Direction guidance to available parking spaces, helping reduce traffic congestion and air pollution
