The Ahmedabad Crime Branch’s Special Operations Group (SOG) arrested a 26-year-old man and seized nearly 1.9 kg of charas worth over ₹4.68 lakh during a late-night operation on the Naroda-Muthiya village road, police said on Sunday.

The accused has been identified as Ajay alias Badshah Baghel, son of Maheshbhai Baghel, a casual labourer by occupation and a resident of Khodiyar Nagar, Noble Nagar, Ahmedabad. His native address is in Meghaninagar, police said.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the arrest was made at approximately 12:35 am on January 5, 2026, near Shankheshwar Township on the Naroda-Muthiya village road. Acting on a tip-off received earlier in the day, an SOG team led by Police Inspector P V Desai laid a trap after completing all mandatory procedural formalities under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Police said the information indicated that the accused, who is physically challenged with a limp in his right leg, was carrying an illegal consignment of charas and was expected to arrive at the location late at night to sell it.

During a personal search, the police recovered a cloth bag from his possession. On inspection, the bag was found to contain five packets of dark brown solid substance, which on preliminary examination and subsequent testing by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) mobile unit was identified as charas.

The total net weight of the seized contraband was found to be 1 kg 872 grams and 120 milligrams, valued at approximately Rs 4.68 lakh, police said. In addition, an Android mobile phone worth ₹5,000 and ₹300 in cash were also recovered, taking the total value of seized items to ₹4.73 lakh.

An FSL officer conducted chemical testing at the SOG office in Juhapura, confirming the substance as charas. After the entire process, the samples would be sent to the Directorate of Forensic Science, Gandhinagar, for detailed analysis.

During questioning, the accused reportedly told investigators that he had procured the contraband from an unidentified person in Ahmedabad for retail sale. Police are now probing the supply chain to identify the source and possible links to a larger narcotics network.

A case has been registered under Sections of the NDPS Act at the SOG Crime Branch, Ahmedabad city. Further investigation is underway.
