Ahmedabad Rural SOG cracks down on illegal abortion racket in Bavla

The Ahmedabad Rural Special Operations Group (SOG) has exposed an illegal abortion racket in Bavla town, acting on a tip-off received by the team during routine patrolling. The raid was conducted in coordination with the Bavla Taluka Health Department to target unregistered medical practitioners and illegal termination of pregnancies.

The senior officials had earlier issued instructions to identify and take strict action against unregistered medical practitioners endangering public health and those involved in illegal abortion activities.

The SOG staff were patrolling the Bavla town area when they received credible information about illegal abortion activities at Panama Guest House, room number 105. It was alleged that one Hemlattaben, wife of Kalpeshbhai Chinubhai Darji, a resident of Dholka, was carrying out abortions without holding any valid medical degree.

Following the tip-off, the team coordinated with Taluka Health Officer, and Medical Officer at the Urban Health Centre of Bavla, carried out the raid at the guest house. The operation uncovered illegal abortion procedures underway, leading to the registration of a case at Bavla Police Station under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971.

The accused, Hemlattaben, admitted to not possessing a medical degree but having completed a nursing course and previously worked at Santokba Hospital in Dholka. She used this experience to illegally perform abortions for personal financial gain, charging significant amounts to pregnant women seeking termination of pregnancy. Her modus operandi involved renting rooms at Panama Guest House to carry out the procedures.

Three women were present at the site, one of whom had just undergone an abortion. A foetus was also found at the location. Following this, legal action has been initiated against the three women, and a case has been registered at Bavla Police Station. Further investigation is going.
