Ahmedabad Police stage mock thefts to raise public awareness ahead of Diwali

In a unique public awareness drive, the Karanj police in Ahmedabad have taken to the streets in disguise—posing as petty thieves—to alert citizens about the need for vigilance during festive shopping.

The initiative, led by Police Inspector P H Bhati of Karanj Police Station and his team under the supervision of DCP Zone 2, Bharatkumar Rathod, aims to prevent incidents of theft and pickpocketing that typically surge during the Diwali season.

According to officials, police personnel have been patrolling crowded markets and shopping zones during peak hours, both in uniform and plain clothes, to monitor suspicious activity and engage with the public. “We are simulating theft-like situations to make citizens aware of how quickly such incidents can happen if one is careless with belongings,” said a senior officer from the Karanj police station.

Alongside the mock exercises, continuous public announcements are being made through loudspeakers, advising people to keep valuables secure, avoid carrying large amounts of cash, and remain alert in busy market areas.

DCP Rathod said the initiative is part of the city police’s broader preventive efforts to ensure a “hassle-free and safe Diwali for all citizens”.

Police have also intensified foot patrols in major markets such as Ratan Pol, Dhalgarwad, and Manek Chowk, where festive footfall is at its highest. The awareness campaign, officers said, will continue throughout the festive season.
