In a strong message aimed at enforcing road discipline within the government machinery itself, the Ahmedabad Traffic Police on Friday carried out a day-long special enforcement drive against government employees found violating traffic rules, registering over 1,300 cases and collecting fines exceeding ₹6.16 lakh.

The action followed specific instructions issued by the city’s Police Commissioner after it was observed that employees working in various government offices were routinely commuting on two-wheelers without helmets and using four-wheelers either without number plates or fitted with illegal dark films.

Based on these directions, traffic police teams were deployed at the entry and exit gates of major government offices across Ahmedabad between 9 am and 8 pm on January 2. The special campaign focused on checking helmet compliance, illegal dark films on car windows, and vehicles without or with tampered number plates.

Officials said the aim was to ensure that government employees, including police personnel, set an example by strictly adhering to traffic laws.

Over 1,300 civilian government employees and police personnel were booked

During the drive, a total of 1,250 cases were registered against civilian government employees. The violations primarily involved riding without helmets, use of dark films on vehicles, and absence or manipulation of number plates. The enforcement resulted in the collection of ₹5.77 lakh in fines, while around 10 vehicles were detained.

Notably, police personnel were not spared. Traffic teams registered 80 cases against police staff for similar violations, imposed fines amounting to ₹38,800, and detained one vehicle, officials said.
