Ahmedabad police file case against AMC officials after Jashodanagar woman dies in self-immolation

Ahmedabad police have registered a case against two Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) officials after a woman allegedly set herself on fire during a demolition drive in Jashodanagar, near Punitnagar Crossing.

Witnesses said the woman, whose shop was targeted for demolition, pleaded with officials to spare it, describing it as her sole source of livelihood. The pleas were reportedly ignored, and officials allegedly responded harshly.

Complaint filed with Vatva GIDC police

A youth from Jashodanagar filed a complaint at Vatva GIDC Police Station against the Estate Department Ward Inspector of Vastral area and the Sub-Inspector of Ramol-Hathijan Ward. The complaint states that municipal officials arrived on the morning of 14 August to demolish illegal shops.

According to the complaint, the shopkeeper requested time to remove his goods, but the officials refused, prompting a heated exchange. Even as nearby shopkeepers gathered, the corporation staff continued preparations for demolition.

Woman attempts self-immolation

The shopkeeper’s wife, Narmadaben, arrived with family members and asked officials for time before the demolition. The officials allegedly ignored their request. Hurt by the response, Narmadaben poured kerosene on herself and attempted self-immolation in front of the Estate and Encroachment Department team.

She was rushed for medical treatment but later succumbed to her injuries.

Vatva GIDC Police have registered a case of abetment and begun further investigation. The incident has sparked criticism from local residents over what they see as the administration’s insensitivity during the operation. Locals questioned the lack of a humanitarian approach in carrying out the demolitions.
