Following the Gujarat High Court’s stern stance on traffic management in Ahmedabad, the police have initiated strict action. On Friday, the traffic police conducted a special drive against wrong-side driving and registered nearly 2,000 cases in a single day, collecting fines amounting to ₹33 lakh.
The Gujarat High Court has repeatedly reprimanded the state government and Ahmedabad police for their inaction regarding road encroachments and mismanagement of traffic in the city. As a result, the police occasionally launch special drives to address these issues.
On Friday, a traffic drive was carried out across various areas of Ahmedabad targeting motorists driving on the wrong side. This campaign alone resulted in 2,000 cases being filed and fines worth ₹33 lakh being collected.
Notably, traffic enforcement had previously been limited to prominent roads like SG Highway and CG Road. However, after a long time, police took action across most parts of the city against wrong-way drivers. In addition to this, encroachments at several locations were cleared, and roads were made accessible again.
The court explicitly stated on Thursday that accidents caused by individuals driving on the wrong side of the road are increasing, resulting in the loss of innocent lives. The bench of Justice A S Supehia and Justice R T Vachchhani directed the authorities to deal strictly with such lawbreakers — seize their vehicles, and make them aware of the law.
