Ahmedabad permits removal of decades-old trees for flyover and road projects

Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has granted permission to remove nearly 273 trees—many of them around 50 years old—for upcoming infrastructure projects, including flyovers at three locations and an iconic road at one location.
According to official details, the highest number of trees will be removed for the Naroda Patiya four-lane flyover, where 142 trees are marked to be felled. Work on cutting some of these trees has already begun.
40 lakh saplings planned; over ₹69 crore spent in 2025–26
For 2025–26, AMC has earmarked over ₹69 crore for planting 40 lakh saplings across various parts of the city. Officials also state that more than 12 lakh trees have been counted so far under the ongoing tree census.
In another project, to widen the bridge next to the Chimanbhai Patel Bridge from RTO Circle towards Sabarmati–Chandkheda and to construct a new railway overbridge along the Torrent Power side, 73 trees fall within the alignment. Of these, five trees will be retained and the remaining 68 will be removed. The civic body will conduct a public auction for these trees on December 11.
Additionally, for the flyover planned from Law Garden to Panchvati Junction and further towards Sheth C.N. Vidyalaya, 49 trees are identified as obstructing the alignment. Four trees will be preserved, while 17 trees will be removed through a public auction.
As Ahmedabad continues to deal with rising air pollution levels, these permissions for the removal of mature green cover come at a time when the city is also investing heavily in plantation drives
