In a fresh instance of public firing in one of Ahmedabad’s upscale localities, a man allegedly opened multiple rounds of fire outside his residence in Subhash Society near Vijay Char Rasta on Sunday afternoon following a heated quarrel with his wife. No injuries were reported.

According to police, the incident took place around 3.30 pm at Bungalow No 16 of Subhash Society, where accused Rahul Soni allegedly engaged in an argument with his wife, who had recently come to stay at her maternal home in the same locality. The dispute escalated, after which Soni allegedly stepped outside the house in anger and fired several rounds in the open.

Initial accounts had suggested two rounds were fired. However, police later confirmed that Soni discharged as many as seven rounds using a revolver and a 12-bore firearm — one shot inside the compound and several outside the house’s main gate — sending shockwaves among residents of the quiet neighbourhood.

Officers from Gujarat University Police Station rushed to the spot upon receiving information and detained Soni. The firearms used in the incident have been seized and an investigation is under way to ascertain the motive behind the quarrel and the circumstances leading to the firing.

Police said no person was injured in the incident, though the firing caused panic within the residential society. Further legal action has been initiated and statements of neighbours and family members are being recorded.
