A 47-year-old man was injured in an alleged knife attack following a dispute over foreign currency exchange in the Gomtipur area of Ahmedabad, police said on Tuesday.

According to Gomtipur police, the accused, identified as Akash Makwana, allegedly attacked Bharatbhai Jivanbhai with a sharp weapon on the night of April 13.

Bharatbhai, a resident of Rajpur in Gomtipur, stated that the dispute stemmed from ongoing discussions regarding the exchange of foreign currency notes. He alleged that the accused had been repeatedly pressuring him on the matter over the past several days.

On Monday evening, around 9 pm, Bharatbhai had gone to meet the accused’s uncle near his residence when the accused confronted him again. “He started abusing the victim and demanded to know why he was not responding regarding the currency exchange,” said police

When Bharatbhai asked him to remain calm, the accused allegedly became enraged, ran into his house, and returned with a concealed sharp weapon. He then attempted to attack the complainant.

“In an attempt to save himself, the complainant moved aside but sustained injuries on the left side of his body,” said police.

Hearing his cries, neighbours and family members rushed to the scene, following which the accused fled. The injured man was taken to the Civil Hospital in a 108 ambulance, where he is currently undergoing treatment. Police said he is conscious and out of danger.

Based on the complaint, Gomtipur police have registered a case of assault and are searching for the accused, who remains absconding.

“The accused attacked the victim with intent to cause serious harm. Efforts are under way to trace and apprehend him,” a police official said.
