A senior manager at an IT firm in Ahmedabad was defrauded of ₹1.93 crore after a woman, whom he met on a matrimonial site, convinced him to pay various charges under the pretense of saving her from a legal issue.

The victim had registered on the Brahmin matrimonial site to find a potential life partner. A woman named Lalita, claiming to be a divorcee with one child and living in Los Angeles, USA, contacted him. She introduced herself as a doctor and expressed her intention to marry him. Lalita later said she would be visiting Ahmedabad to meet him.

However, on October 15, the manager received a call from a woman named Mahek Agarwal, who posed as an immigration officer. She claimed that Lalita had been detained at Mumbai airport with ₹16 crore in cash and was being investigated. Mahek told the man that he could save Lalita by paying for the immigration charges. She even arranged for the victim to speak with Lalita, making the situation seem even more real.

Panicking, the victim agreed to pay the requested fees and charges, which amounted to ₹1.93 crore. Later, the fraudsters demanded an additional ₹83 lakh, at which point the man realised he had been tricked.

The victim filed a complaint with the Bopal police station, and an investigation is currently underway.
