Ahmedabad man duped of rs 1.42 cr in matrimonial site scam

A resident of Ahmedabad’s Memnagar was duped of ₹1.42 crore after connecting with a Delhi-based woman on a matrimonial site.

According to the complaint filed by victim Gurpreet Singh at the Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Cell, he connected with Gurleen Agarwal via the matrimonial app ‘Sangam’ in December 2024. She claimed to be a fashion designer based in Delhi.

After liking her profile, Singh contacted her through the app, and they exchanged phone numbers.

A few days into their friendship, she claimed she invested in USDT (a stablecoin cryptocurrency) and said it offered high returns. Trusting her, Singh made multiple investments totalling ₹57 lakh with a link (gsgfxau.com) shared by Agarwal. However, when he tried to withdraw the money, he was unable to do so.

As per the complaint, he received an email from ID (info@ratebgcltgi.com and support@ratebearstear.com) stating that to withdraw the funds, he would have to pay an additional ₹24 lakh in taxes.

Trusting the communication again, Singh deposited the said amount and was asked to shell out more, which he again did.

Amid the growing suspicion, Singh checked her profile on the matrimonial site and discovered that the photo in her bio-data was of another woman, taken from an Instagram account named Reena Sharma. Realising he had been duped, he filed a complaint with the Cyber Crime Cell. Police have now initiated an investigation into the matter.
