Ahmedabad man dies after brother assaults him during scuffle, accused arrested

A 42-year-old painter died during treatment at Civil Hospital after allegedly being attacked with a sharp vegetable-cutting tool by his younger brother following a domestic dispute in the Thakkarnagar area of Ahmedabad.
The incident took place on January 31 at a residential house in Chamunda Chali in Thakkarnagar. The deceased, identified as Jitendrabhai Sahni, was rushed to hospital after sustaining a severe abdominal injury but succumbed to his wounds on February 2 around 9.15 pm.
As per the First Information Report (FIR) lodged by the victim’s wife, Priyankaben Sahni (35), the altercation occurred when the family members were at home. Jitendrabhai, who worked as a casual painter, had been painting the upper floor of the house earlier in the day. Around 2.30 pm, a quarrel broke out between him and his younger brother, Satyendra Sahni (39), allegedly after the latter was asked to help him with the painting work.

The argument escalated rapidly, during which Satyendra allegedly picked up a vegetable-cutting paddle and attempted to attack another family members. When Jitendrabhai intervened to stop the fight, Satyendra allegedly turned on him and struck him on the left side of the abdomen with the implement, causing profuse bleeding.
Family members and neighbours raised an alarm, after which the accused fled the spot. Jitendrabhai was taken to Civil Hospital in an emergency ambulance, where he underwent medical examination and was later discharged at the family’s request. However, his condition worsened the next day, following which he was again shifted to hospital and underwent surgery. Doctors later declared him dead.
Police said a case has been registered against Satyendra Sahni for culpable homicide amounting to murder under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Statements of witnesses, including family members and neighbours present at the time of the incident, are being recorded.
“We have arrested the accused in the matter and also recovered the weapon which was used in the crime. Further investigation is under way to ascertain the exact sequence of events,” a police officer said.
The accused's native village is in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh, police added.
The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and further legal action will follow based on forensic and medical reports, officials said.
