A man was booked on Wednesday for allegedly assaulting his wife with a knife during a domestic quarrel at their Vastral residence in Ahmedabad, leaving her hospitalised.

The accused, identified as Lal Singh Nao, a native of Limbodar village, allegedly attacked his wife Bharatiben (46) at her residence in Vastral, on the afternoon of October 1. The couple had been married since 1999 and have two children — a married daughter and a 22-year-old son, who works in a private company.

As per a police official, the incident occurred around 2.30 pm when she noticed her husband cutting a rope with a knife inside the house. When she questioned him, Lal Singh allegedly told her to “mind her own business” and began arguing. He then dragged her by her hair into the bedroom, closed the door and started beating her with a stick.

The complaint states that during the scuffle, Lal Singh struck her in the stomach with the knife he was holding. “She pushed him and came out screaming for help. Her neighbours intervened and rescued her from further assault. Later, her son then rushed her to the hospital,” said the police official.

Police said she is conscious and out of immediate danger. The victim has also alleged that her husband had been subjecting her to physical and mental harassment for the past year. Based on her complaint, a case has been registered against Lal Singh under relevant sections of the BNS, including assault and domestic violence provisions.

Police officials said statements of neighbours, family members and medical staff have been recorded, and further investigation is underway.
