The Isanpur police have registered a case of abetment to suicide and dowry harassment against a 25-year-old man after his wife Durgavati allegedly died by suicide following years of physical and mental abuse over dowry demands.

The woman’s father, Khudhiram, a resident of Bhayandar in Mumbai, in his complaint stated that his 25-year-old daughter married Tejas Bhavsar of Isanpur, Ahmedabad, in April 2021 after the couple met through social media. The wedding was held in Mumbai as per social customs, and the bride’s family gave gold ornaments and a ring as part of the ceremony.

Soon after marriage, Durgavati moved to Ahmedabad with Tejas. The couple initially stayed with his parents before shifting to a rented house. Over time, the complaint states, Tejas began demanding money from the woman and her family to meet rent and household expenses. “We gave him around ₹50,000 in small amounts, but his demands only grew,” Khudhiram said in his statement.

The FIR further alleges that Tejas beat Durgavati, threw her out of their home on several occasions, and repeatedly demanded large sums as dowry. About three or four days before the incident, Durgavati reportedly phoned her father saying that Tejas had demanded ₹5 lakh to buy a house and threatened to kill her if the money was not provided.

Khudhiram told police that he tried to speak to his son-in-law but Tejas disconnected the call. “My daughter said that since the first year of marriage he has been physically and mentally torturing her for dowry,” the complaint reads.

On the morning of September 21, Durgavati was found dead by hanging at her home in Pradishi Society, Vishalnagar, Isanpur. The FIR names Tejas Bhavsar as the prime accused for abetment to suicide and dowry harassment.

Police said statements from family members and neighbours have been recorded and have arrested the accused in the matter and further investigation is under way.

An officer at Isanpur police station said the body has been sent for post-mortem and that a search is on for Tejas. “We are probing all aspects of the complaint and appropriate legal action will follow,” the officer said.
