Ahmedabad man booked after woman alleges exploitation on pretext of marriage

The Ghatlodia police have registered a rape case against an Ahmedabad youth, identified as Nakul Asharam Soni, after a 23-year-old woman alleged that he repeatedly established physical relations with her by promising marriage and later reneged on the commitment. The survivor, whose name has been changed to Riya Patel, submitted a detailed written complaint outlining events dating back to 2021.
According to the FIR, Riya had been living with her mother in Chandkheda and working as a telecaller. She stated that she had earlier lived with her aunt in Vadaj before marrying a man named Sachin Suthar in 2022. The marriage reportedly lasted only a few months before differences arose, after which she returned to live with her mother.
In 2024, as both she and her mother were working and frequently away from home, Riya moved temporarily to a PG accommodation on C G Road. During this period, she reconnected with Soni, whom she had first met in Vadaj. Their communication began through Instagram and later extended to WhatsApp.
The complaint states that during Navratri 2024, Soni invited her to join him for garba. The two met on multiple occasions afterwards, and their friendship soon developed into a closer bond. In November that year, they travelled with friends to Diu. According to Riya, Soni expressed romantic interest during the trip.
On 14 November 2024, the two met at a café on C G Road, where Soni allegedly proposed to her and urged her to divorce her husband, assuring her that he intended to marry her.
‘He promised marriage and forced physical relations’
In early 2025, Riya began living in a PG in Ghatlodia with a roommate. She alleged that on January 28, 2025, during an early birthday celebration for Soni, he came to her PG with a friend. When the others briefly stepped out, Soni allegedly assured her again that he would marry her and established physical relations with her. The FIR states that this intimacy occurred “with false promises of marriage”.
Later, the landlord of the PG reportedly asked Riya and her roommate to vacate the premises following an internal dispute. She then shifted to another PG, where she alleges Soni again visited her and continued to press for physical intimacy while postponing marriage.
The survivor told police that disagreements began to escalate after she questioned him about marriage, leading to strained relations and further disputes.
Investigation under way
Police officials confirmed that a case has been filed under relevant sections pertaining to rape and cheating based on the survivor’s account. Statements of witnesses, including her roommates and friends present during key events, are being recorded.
Ghatlodia Police Inspector C G Joshi said, “We have registered an FIR based on the complaint submitted by the survivor. All claims are being verified and further investigation is ongoing.”
The police added that technical evidence, communication records and statements of those known to both parties will form a significant part of the inquiry.
Further updates are awaited as the investigation progresses.
