Ahmedabad likely to get new mayor by next week, sensing process completed

Ahmedabad is set to get a new Mayor and Deputy Mayor next week, as the sensing process for both posts has been completed. The final decision will be taken by the BJP parliamentary board in the coming days.
According to sources, a crucial meeting of the party’s parliamentary board was held on Saturday at the state headquarters, where discussions were carried out regarding potential candidates.
Aspirants for both posts were also heard during the process. For each position, a panel of three names has been shortlisted, from which the final selection will be made.
Party insiders indicate that approval on the names could come within the next week, following which an official announcement is expected.
Meanwhile, political activity has intensified within the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC), particularly among Congress corporators. The race for the Leader of Opposition post has triggered internal competition, with multiple corporators lobbying for the position.
The Congress camp has seen factional differences emerge, with corporators divided into groups while staking claim to the post. The party currently has a mix of representation, including 18 Muslim, 7 Dalit, and 7 general category corporators, adding a social dimension to the selection
Developments suggest that after the 2021 AMC elections, in which the BJP secured a dominant victory with 160 seats, appointments to key positions have remained closely watched. Several senior leaders and former office-bearers have also been involved in consultations over the latest appointments.
Sources further reveal that discussions have also taken place regarding other key roles, including the standing committee chairman and opposition leadership, with panels of names prepared. The final decisions are expected to be taken by the designated committee in the coming days.
An official announcement on the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor is anticipated soon.
