Ahmedabad Police have arrested six persons, including the nephew of the victim, for allegedly abducting a 43-year-old land trader in broad daylight from Vastral and extorting cash and jewellery worth over ₹52 lakh from his family. Investigators said the nephew, identified as Rishi, provided the tip-off and orchestrated the entire plot with the other accused.

The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon when complainant Ajay Surendrasinh Rajput, a resident of Vatva, was travelling on his motorcycle from Vastral towards his plot near Santoshinagar in Memadpura. Around 1 pm, a group of men waylaid him near the old Kabir Mandir on a single-lane stretch by blocking the road with a black Innova car.

Rajput was allegedly assaulted and forced into the vehicle by the gang. He identified two of the men as Sangram Sikarwar and Shivam alias Kaku, while three others — Suraj Chauhan, Seju, and Aman Bhadoriya were also part of the group. Police said that the five accused, acting on Rishi’s information, demanded ₹1 crore from Rajput at knifepoint and threatened to kill him if he did not comply.

Rajput, in his complaint, stated that the assailants repeatedly beat him with sticks and fists before compelling him to call his wife and a trusted associate to arrange money and valuables. Under duress, Rajput’s wife handed over ₹7 lakh in cash, 25 tolas of gold ornaments valued at ₹25 lakh, and 1.2 kg of silver jewellery worth ₹1.5 lakh to his employee Vijay Bharwad, who was instructed to deliver them at Chiloda circle.

Police said the accused collected the valuables in two instalments, first cash and later gold and silver jewellery, while holding Rajput captive in the vehicle. He was later dumped on a roadside stretch between Ranasan railway crossing and the Narmada canal around 7.30 pm. The gang allegedly snatched his two mobile phones before fleeing.

The victim then contacted his associates and approached the Ramol police station to complain. The police registered an FIR under sections of kidnapping, extortion, criminal intimidation and assault.

“Based on technical surveillance and inputs, our teams tracked down and arrested all six accused within hours of the complaint. Among those held is Rishi, the victim’s nephew, who provided crucial details about his uncle’s movements and assets. He had promised the others a share of the loot,” said a senior police official.

Investigators believe the conspiracy was premeditated, with the nephew allegedly giving away information about Rajput’s finances, routine, and even coordinating the spot for interception.

Police have recovered part of the looted cash and jewellery and are verifying whether more persons were involved in the wider conspiracy.
