Ahmedabad ISKCON bridge accident case: 1,684 page charge sheet filed

The police seek approval from the court for further investigation to bring new evidences

Gujarat's first-of-its-kind case of charge sheet filing in mere seven days

On July 27, the police filed a 1984-page charge sheet in the Mirzapur court in the case of a horrible ISKCON bridge accident that killed nine people. Ahmedabad police filed the charge sheet against Tathya Patel and his father, Pragnesh Patel. 

This is the first instance in Gujarat where a charge sheet was filed in just seven days. The police have asked for the approval of the court for further investigation into the case. The charge sheet includes mention of IPC Section 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) among others. 

The charge sheet includes:

- A total of 196 witness statements

- 15 documented evidences

- Names of nine deceased victims

- A total of 25 witness records

- Eight treatment certificates

- Names of 12 injured patients, including two under treatment

Which sections applied to the accused?

In this high-profile case, the police have charged the accused, Tathya Patel, and his father, Pragnesh Patel, with Section 704 (provision of punishment up to death) and Section 279 (negligent driving- imprisonment extension of 6 months) of the IPC.

Section 338 (Injuring the safety of human life by acting rashly or negligently; imprisonment which may extend to two years); and Section P08(2) (insulting or threatening someone with intent to provoke; Imprisonment which may extend to two years). Among all these sections, Section 304 is the most cogent, which defines punishment for culpable homicide.

Efforts of the police team

After the home minister's special request, 17 officers, including the deputy commissioner of police (DCP), assistant commissioner of police (ACP), and police inspector (PI) of the city, came into action. A team of 10 officers, including the deputy superintendent of police (DSP), superintendent of police (SP), police inspector (PI), and police sub-inspector (PSI), investigated and presented the chargesheet in seven days.

Pragnesh Patel filed a bail application

 Meanwhile, Pragnesh Patel has filed a bail application in the court. The application for the same is likely to be heard today.
